Arts & Heritage Lovers – How does a weekend checking out the
galleries in Toronto or Ottawa sound? Or what about studio tours? For the more
hands-on types, you could sign up for photography or painting courses, needlework courses, or maybe
some pottery workshops. Heritage lovers
might want to join up with their friends for Doors Open. There are so many
great Ontario history museums to check out too, and most of them offer
admission at a very reasonable price. A room at an historic B and B
or a grand old hotel like Royal York or the Chateau Laurier would be the
perfect place to base your trip. For more ideas, check out my page on Ontario Culture.
Beach Babes – If the long hot summer means beach volleyball, swimming, and wind surfing to you, then check out Ontario’s best-known beaches: Wasaga Beach, Sauble Beach, Port Stanley, Port Dover, Long Point Beach, and Sandbanks Provincial Park near Picton Ontario, just to name a few.
Birding – Are you and your buddies birders? Then you probably have heard of Pelee Island, the famous UNESCO wetland. Long Point, the Niagara River, the Grand River, Hamilton, Wye Marsh Conservation Area, Presqu'ile Provincial Park and Algonquin Park are also important birding areas (IBAs) in Ontario.
Boat Tours – Ontario is a land of lakes, especially north of Toronto, so there are tons of places across the province that offer scenic cruises, such as the Island Queen in Georgian Bay. Check out Orillia, Gravenhurst, Midland, Kingston and the Thousand Islands, the Grand River and Toronto harbour tours for girlfriend getaway ideas. Ottawa and Hamilton also have sightseeing cruises.
Book Lovers – Planning a girlfriend getaway with your Book Club members? I’ve plotted out a tour of Toronto through Atwood’s eyes. And how about a visit to Toronto’s International Festival of Authors? A tour of some Ontario writers’ museums (Stephen Leacock, poet Pauline Johnson) can be very enlightening.
Bus Tours – If you want to leave the driving to someone else on your girlfriend getaway and sit back and enjoy the scenery, then a bus tour is a great solution. Many tour companies offer package tours lasting one day or several days visiting the most popular attractions such as the Agawa Canyon, the Muskoka region, tours of Amish country, steam-train rides, live theatre and lunch, garden tours, etc. Companies offering day trips include Cardinal Tours, Hanover Tours, Cherrey Bus Lines, Kerr Travel, and Great Canadian Holidays. (TIP: even if you’re NOT planning a bus tour, these company’s web sites are great sources of ideas for places to visit.)
Casinos – Ready to take your chances? Ontario has several casinos; the major players are the two in Niagara Falls (Casino Niagara and Niagara Fallsview), Casino Rama just outside of Orillia, and Casino Windsor. They have hotels and concert halls and stores and restaurants – full-fledged resorts. But there are other smaller casinos as well, in Sault Ste Marie, Thunder Bay, Port Perry, Ganonque, Brantford, etc.
Chocolate Tours – If you’re wondering if chocolate deserves a category
of its own, then you just don’t understand women and chocolate! You’ll find
guided tours of chocolatiers and even chocolate-making classes in Toronto and Ottawa. In Niagara-on-the-Lake, you
can tour the chocolate maker Chocolate f/x and bring home goodies to enjoy. Niagara Falls has the big Hershey's store.
Cottaging – Get the girls together and rent a cottage on the lake. Build a campfire, go for a hike, or go boating. Where will you go? The Muskokas? Lake Erie shore? Georgian Bay? The Kawarthas?
Festivals – Festivals are more fun with friends! See my page on Ontario Festivals for inspiration.
Garden Tours – If you and your girlfriends like to “dig the dirt”, then
Ontario’s gardens are your ideal destination. Check out the amazing Royal
Botanical Garden for tours and workshops or just a pleasant hike. In Niagara, discover the Niagara Parks Garden. Many cities
and towns host tours of private gardens as fundraisers every spring and summer,
and they can be great places to get ideas for your own backyard. Couple the
tour with afternoon tea and your girlfriend getaway rejuvenation package is complete. For more info, check my page about Great Gardens in Ontario.
Golf – You don’t have to be a pro to enjoy a weekend of golf at one of
Ontario’s golf resorts. Get your exercise and get pampered too with fine dining
and some spa treatments on your girlfriend getaway . Places to discover: Deerhurst Resort, Briars, Taboo
Resort, Nottawasaga Resort, Cranberry Resort, Oakwood
Resort, and more. Check out some of the most scenic golf courses in Ontario.
Gourmet Gals – If farmers markets, specialty food shops, bakeries,
patisseries, and restaurants are your idea of the perfect weekend agenda, here
a few places to wet your appetite: Prince Edward County taste trail, St Jacobs
Village, Yorkville in Toronto. Maybe get the girls together and take a cooking
class or sign up for a foodies tour. The province is full of food festivals, especially during the summer. And don't forget our famous Canadian maple sugar! Yum.
Music Lovers – Remember when you were a teenager and you headed off to the “big concert” with your girlfriends and then partied all night? Well, there’s no reason why you can’t do this again; either take in a big name celebrity concert at centres in Toronto like the Air Canada Centre or Molson Ampitheatre, or see stars for free at Harbourfront. Or plan a weekend around a festival like Blues Festival in Ottawa, or the Toronto Jazz Festival.
Resorts – For more details about the smorgasbord of activities they offer (such as spa treatments, boating, casino, golf), see Ontario resorts. Definitely a popular plan for girlfriend getaways.
Shopping – Whether it’s clothing, jewellery, art work or antiques, there’s nothing like browsing in the shops with the girls. I have a whole page about Ontario Shopping to get you started.
Ski Weekends – Head up to Blue Mountain, Horseshoe Resort, Hidden Valley, Calabogie Peaks, Glen Eden … or any of the dozens of other ski hills and trails across the province.
Spa & Wellness Retreats – Who can say no to facials and pedicures
and massages, tennis, sauna, and swimming? Or how about a yoga retreat in
Algonquin Park? Northern Edge Algonquin offers some pretty creative retreat
packages! Read more about girlfriend getaways ideas at Spa Resorts.
Tea Party – Quench your thirst and satisfy your appetite at dozens of great little tea rooms across the province. InToronto, have tea at the King Edward Hotel and the Royal York Hotel. In Oshawa, you can tour the elegant Parkwood Estate and then have tea in their stunning garden. In the Niagara region check out the tea room MacFarland House museum in Niagara on the Lake, or the Crown and Crumpet in Jordan. For more ideas and tea-tasting events, look up the “Tea, Tea and More Tea” group at meetup.com.
