Aboriginal Art Galleries: Where to Shop
Aboriginal art galleries are your best bet for finding work by internationally-renowned artists like Kenojuak Ashevak and Norval Morrisseau.
They're also great places to find pieces by emerging artists who will someday be as famous as these veterans, and to learn more about the various types of work created by Aboriginal art makers. Many foreign visitors like to bring home a piece of Canadian native art as a souvenir of their trip to Canada. If you want the REAL thing (and not a knockoff made abroad), be sure to shop in legitimate galleries. Most shops attached to art galleries and museums sell original works and reproductions. The one at the Museum of Inuit Art in Toronto has one of the best Inuit art galleries around, with prints, wall hangings and sculpture. You can also find a great number of commercial galleries in the province specializing in this kind of art, such as: Arctic Experience Gallery, 191 James Street South, Hamilton Ontario Inuit sculpture and prints. Balzac Fine Arts, Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto Broad selection of Inuit sculpture. Belongs to a chain of three art galleries, one in Ottawa and the other in Quebec. Bay of Spirits, 156 Front St. W., Toronto Inuit and First Nations and West Coast art. Eskimo Art Gallery, 12 Queens Quay W., Toronto Inuit sculpture, Inuit prints and more. Large gallery at Harbourfront. Feheley Fine Arts, 14 Hazelton Ave., Toronto One of the oldest Inuit art galleries in Ontario. Gallery Indigena Inc., 69 Ontario Street, Stratford Ontario Original First Nations and Inuit art. Pacific coast masks. Also sells prints, calendars, cards, etc. The Guild Shop, 118 Cumberland St., Toronto They're not strictly Aboriginal art; it's actually the Ontario craft association's retail outlet so you'll find a range of artists and artisans from Ontario. But they do have one room devoted to Inuit sculpture. Kinsman Robinson Galleries, 108 Cumberland, Toronto Find works by famous First Nations artist Norval Morrisseau. Ninavik Native Arts, 3845 Main Street, Jordan Ontario Large Inuit art gallery in a small town in the Niagara Region. Specializes in Iroquois and Inuit art.
