Jan 3, 2010, Novels Set in Ontario

Whenever I'm planning a trip, I enjoy reading novels set in my destination. This gives me a feel for the place, sometimes even better than non-fiction descriptions do! I just stumbled upon a great web site that allows you to enter in a destination and come up with a list of novels that are set in that place. I plugged in Ontario and lo and behold, it spit out 348 books! The first one is a novel call Yellow Pages, by Nicole Markotic, described as "a partially fictionalized account of the life of Alexander Graham Bell" who lived in Brantford, Ontario. This cool site is sure to keep me busy: http://www.bibliotravel.com.

Jan 3, 2010, Queen Street Niagara Falls: Southern Ontario's Newest "Hip District"

Have you discovered Queen Street Niagara Falls yet? No? If you love the art galleries, one-of-a-kind boutique shopping and great restaurants, you're going to love this street. It's the newest hip new district in southern Ontario. Resembles that "other" Queen Street (Queen West, in Toronto) a bit, although it's smaller of course. But still full of great places to explore! I recently spent an afternoon shopping here, and then just after Christmas met friends for dinner at Paris Crepes Bistro (walk into this place and the delicious smell will transport you to France in seconds). I recommend the French Onion Soup, mushroom crepes (made of buckwheat!), and chocolate fondue. For more info about this cool street, check out their web site: http://www.queenstreetniagarafalls.com.
